Accessibility Statement

How we make our website and documents accessible for everyone

What this statement is about

This statement explains how accessible our website and services are. It covers:

  • The Claru website (claru.co.uk)
  • The Easy Read documents we create
  • How we follow accessibility rules
  • How to report accessibility problems

Our promise to you

We want everyone to be able to use our website and documents. We work hard to make sure people with disabilities can access our services.

We believe accessibility is a human right. Everyone should be able to:

  • Use our website easily
  • Understand the information we provide
  • Get help when they need it

How we make things accessible

On our website

Keyboard navigation: You can use our website with just a keyboard
Screen readers: Our website works with screen reading software
Clear language: We use simple words and short sentences
Good colour contrast: Text is easy to read against backgrounds
Descriptive links: Link text tells you where you'll go
Clear headings: Pages are organised with proper headings

In our Easy Read documents — content and layout

UKAAF principles: We follow UK accessibility guidelines
Simple language: Short sentences and common words
Clear layout: Plenty of white space and logical structure
Accessible fonts: Easy-to-read typefaces at 18pt minimum, left-aligned
High contrast: Black text on white — 21:1 ratio, well above the WCAG AA minimum
Left-aligned text: No justified text, which can create uneven spacing that makes reading harder

In our Easy Read documents — digital accessibility

Both our PDF and Word outputs include digital accessibility features for people using assistive technology.

Navigable headings: Every section heading is registered as a named destination. Screen readers and PDF viewers can jump between sections.
Image descriptions: All images include alt text descriptions read aloud by screen readers
Correct reading order: Content is structured so screen readers follow the logical flow of the Document
Document metadata: Title and language are declared so assistive technology can identify and read the Document correctly
Word: full heading structure — our Word output uses native heading levels (H1, H2, H3) so screen readers can navigate by heading and announce document structure
Word: native list markup — bullet points use proper list elements, so screen readers announce "list, 3 items" rather than just reading bullet characters

Accessibility standards we follow

WCAG 2.2 AA — our Website

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards for the Claru website itself. These are international rules for making websites accessible. We test our website regularly and fix problems when we find them.

What we can say for the website

  • Keyboard access: All functions work with keyboard only
  • Screen reader support: Proper headings, labels, and alt text
  • Colour contrast: Text meets minimum contrast requirements
  • Text scaling: Text can be enlarged up to 200% without problems
  • Focus indicators: Clear visual focus for keyboard users

What we're still working on

We are honest about where we are still improving.

  • PDF structure tree: Our PDFs include bookmarks and image alt text, but do not yet have a full PDF/UA structure tree (ISO 14289). This is the standard required for complete WCAG compliance on PDF files. We are actively working toward this.
  • User testing: We have not yet tested our documents with real assistive technology users. We plan to do this.
  • Expert audit: A formal WCAG audit by an independent specialist is on our roadmap.

Known accessibility issues

We believe in being open about known limitations. Here is what we know about right now.

PDF Documents — partial digital accessibility

Our PDF output includes bookmarks, image alt text, and correct reading order. However, it does not yet include a full PDF structure tree (PDF/UA, ISO 14289). Without this, some screen readers may not reliably announce image descriptions or document structure. If you need maximum screen reader compatibility today, we recommend downloading the Word version.

We are always improving

We regularly check our Website and Documents and fix problems when we find them. If you find something we have missed, please tell us — your feedback directly shapes what we work on next.
